5 Internet Marketing Tactics to Avoid

Internet marketing is a tricky method to use because there are so many different tactics that can help or hurt your business, and it’s sometimes hard to define what falls into each of those categories. What works for some people won’t work for others, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to take. However, there are a few things you should always avoid.

1.      Adding email addresses without confirming its ok

No one likes junk mail, and if you add people to your email list without confirming they wantto be added, that’s exactly what you’ll become – spam. Make sure that you have permission to add their email address; otherwise you’re just going to irritate people.

2.      You’re not responding to comments

While you can’t change your whole marketing scheme based on one person’s feedback, you can add more value to your company by interacting with consumers and evolving your brand to better fit your customers. People like to feel important. You’re going to become a better business from responding to people and establishing a connection, rather than having customers feel like their being pushed into a black hole when they try to comment on your sites or give feedback.
3.      You’re sending out too much
There’s a fine line between being present and accessible and being overbearing. You want to send out enough marketing material to peak people’s interest and remind them to utilize you when they need your services, but not so much that when they receive something from you their first thought is “Again?!”. How often do you just trash marketing material that people send you – either in the mail or online? Don’t get caught up in quantity over quality.
4.      What you’re sending out doesn’t make sense
While you may have thought the dinosaur graphic in your email blast was cute (“Don’t letwhatever become extinct! Use us!”), it’s really just childish. Professionals don’t want childish, they want… wait for it… professional.
5.      Your website is dead
All the marketing in the world won’t save you if you never update your website, your links don’t work, or there’s no contact information. No one wants to use someone whose practices are out of date and no one wants to take the time to find your correct contact information. Make sure your website is up to date and that people can easily locate you.
Keep your business up to date, professional, and accessible. One easy way to approach internet marketing is to think of all the tactics other companies use that you despise… Then eliminate those. Building a well thought-out internet marketing scheme is inherently good for your company, so make sure you put in the time and effort to making it a quality approach.
